About Red Cards

By Kerri O’Malley

Discipline Chair FRRA

There have been several red cards already this season. Most of the time, the players are unaware of the severity of the penalties associated with these cards. I am asking club officers to please pass on the sanctions associated with red cards so your players are aware of what they can expect.

There have been several red cards already this season. Most of the time, the players are unaware of the severity of the penalties associated with these cards. I am asking club officers to please pass on the sanctions associated with red cards so your players are aware of what they can expect. I have highlighted our most popular infractions below, along with a link to the full set of sanctions. This is for first offense, if it’s your second, it is worse. 1. Punching – first offense – 2 to 3 matches. If the player is defenseless (meaning on the ground in a ruck, or you punch them in the back/while they are unaware)—8 to 11 matches. 2. Referee Abuse For example, calling the ref a curse/cursing about the ref (even while walking away) for giving you a yellow or red card (this is not considered disputing a call, it is considered ref abuse) – 3 to 5 matches. If you are disputing call, it is 1- 3 matches. 3. Dangerous Rucking Raking someone in a ruck – 8 to 11 matches, if directed at the head or neck – 9 to 20 matches http://www.floridarugbyunion.com/handbook-3/ -- scroll down to discipline If your player receives a red card, the ref provides a report. It is in your club and player’s best interest to provide their version of what happened within 48H. Contact info and guidelines on how to do this can be found using the link above. Also, we track yellow cards. If a player receives a yellow card for same infraction in successive games, he gets a one week suspension. If he gets 4 in a year, its 2 matches. Thanks for passing this on to your players, I am sure they will appreciate the heads up. Kerri O’Malley Discipline Chair
